The Colonnades of Kentuckiana are located in Louisville, Kentucky, adjacent to Louisville Slugger Field and Louisville Waterfront Park. The site is currently a vacant public parking lot. It is located at a natural entry point to the downtown area as River Road is a common path for daily commuters. Louisville is located in the Ohio Valley region along the Ohio River. The communities of Louisville and southern Indiana (across the river) are heavily integrated, hence the regional term “Kentuckiana”. The Colonnades of Kentuckiana offer a togetherness similar to that of a watering hole: one that is natural, routine, convenient, and fulfilling. They must be consistently poured into and replenished while serving a variety of people groups in a variety of ways at a variety of times. They contain large spaces for public gatherings or events, small spaces for more private individual and group activities, and transformable spaces for both public and private individual and group purposes. Areas for both bonding with others and individual reflection are emphasized throughout the Colonnades of Kentuckiana. This project contributes to the urban fabric through its connection between Louisville Waterfront Park, the Waterfront Park Place Condominiums, and Louisville Slugger Field. It contributes to the experience of community through serving a variety of audiences in a way that is natural, convenient, and routine. It contributes to the materiality of concrete and masonry through a structural hierarchy by spatial definition that enhances the overall atmospheric experience of users.
With contributions to the surroundng urban fabric, the community experience, and the materiality of concrete and masonry, the Colonnades of Kentuckiana offer a unification of community members by way of togetherness through individualism.
